Frequently Asked Questions

General Fruit Questions

What is a Duncan Grapefruit?

A Duncan Grapefruit is almost round and has a smooth, light yellow rind. The flesh is very pale yellow, juicy, and very seedy. The flavor is considered by many to be superior to similar seedless grapefruit varieties. In flavor, Duncan has remained the standard of grapefruit excellence in Florida.  However, Duncan grapefruit are no longer grown commercially because of the excessive seed count.  White Seedless Grapefruit are available mid-Dec through mid_Jan and are close to the flavor of Duncan.

What is a Pineapple Orange?

An excellent juice or eating orange. A midseason fruit, medium to large size, round to oval, orange color, pebbly peel. Has seeds. The Pineapple orange is acclaimed for its juicy sweetness. (It does not taste like a pineapple.)  Pineapple oranges are the oldest cultivated variety in Florida but are rapidly being replaced by other newer seedless varieties.  We no longer offer Pineapple oranges for shipment.

Can I have the recipe for Mary Mixon’s Ambrosia?

Yes, Ingredients are: Oranges: Section or cut into chunks. Amount depends on the size of your group – Oranges are the main ingredient. Pineapple: Canned, unsweetened, and drained. Cut in small chunks, just enough to flavor. Coconut: Shredded, just a small amount. Red Maraschino Cherries: Cut in halves – for color during the Holidays, use Red and Green. Preparation: Combine oranges, pineapple and cherries – chill (it should be juicy). About 1 hour before serving, mix in coconut. For a festive look sprinkle more coconut on top and a few cherries for decoration. Always best when served fresh.

Note:  Cherries color will fade if prepared and stored for several days due to the acid content of the orange.

What if my fruit arrives spoiled or frozen?

All of our fruit is guaranteed to arrive fresh and in good condition when we are furnished with a correct and complete delivery address. Any damaged or spoiled fruit will be replaced or, if you prefer, if less than 12 pieces are damaged, a credit coupon is issued for use on your next order. The credit coupon can be issued to the sender or the recipient and may also be used in Mixon's Bradenton Florida Store.

What is a “Juice Orange”?

Juice oranges are oranges of any variety selected to have the best characteristics for juicing. They are usually small to medium in size so they fit typical juicers and feel heavy with juice.

What oranges are the sweetest?

All fresh picked Florida oranges are sweet, but Navels, Minneola Tangelos, Murcott Honey Tangerines are perhaps sweeter (less acid) than other varieties. Each variety has its own unique characteristics in color, juice content, flavor, seediness and ease of peeling.

How do I store my fruit after I receive it?

Oranges last longest in a cool area that’s well ventilated. Keep them off the floor to help keep the air moving around the fruit. Oranges maintain their “just picked” freshness for up to six weeks when stored between 30 & 50 degrees F. The best temperature range for grapefruit is between 50 & 55 degrees F. The skin is sensitive to cold and blemishes appear but it does not affect the fruit inside. Citrus keeps longer if refrigerated.

How are Pink Grapefruit and Red Grapefruit different?

These are very similar in taste but Pink is a little juicier and slightly less acidic. The segments of Red are more pinkish to reddish in color, while the Pink is light to nearly white in color.  Pink grapefruit are no longer available as they are rapidly being replaced by Red Grapefruit due to the popularity of the deeper red color of the  segments and red blush on the skin.

Which fruit is seedless?

Of the varieties grown by Mixon, only Navel Oranges, Valencia Oranges, Red Grapefruit, and White Grapefruit are considered seedless.  By definition Seedless fruit may contain a few small seeds.

What is an Orlando?

Orlando Tangelo, is a cross between a Duncan Grapefruit and a Dancy Tangerine. They are light orange in color, easy to peel and section, sweet and juicy. Orlandos have seeds and are only available in December.

What is a Murcott?

Also called Honey Tangerine because of their sweet flavor, it’s a cross between a sweet orange and a tangerine. They are medium in size, easy to peel and section, with a deep orange color. Murcotts contain seeds.  Available Late Jan through mid-March.

What is a Minneola?

Minneola Tangelo or Honeybells are a cross between a Dancy Tangerine and a Royal Grapefruit. They are medium to large in size, deep orange and slightly pear shaped. They are very juicy and have a unique flavor. Minneolas contain seeds.  Available Jan to Mid-March.

Which orange is easiest to peel?

Temple oranges (now renamed to Royal Tangerines) with “zipper” skins are easiest to peel Temple oranges do contain 2-3 seeds per section with a unique sweet tangy taste and loaded with juice.  Temples  are very tender to process and ship - for that reason are being phased out of commercial production.  Limited availability in February.

Which orange can I use in a salad?

Any orange is delicious in salads but the seedless varieties are easiest to work with. These include Navel(available from Nov to mid- Mar) and Valencia(available mid Febh to early May)

Gift Fruit Questions

What is the difference between a California Orange and a Florida Orange?

Is there a difference at all? A navel orange from Florida has to be the same as a navel from California. Right? Well, even though many of the fruits are genetically identical, the climate changes the fruit far more than you’d expect.

California Oranges: California’s climate is very arid with very low yearly rainfall. The days are hot and sunny, and the nights are dry and cool. This weather is ideal for raising oranges with thick, beautiful peels. The dry air keeps superficial blemishes from forming on the peels, making them attractive to supermarket shoppers. Having a thicker peel also aids in keeping them fresh for extended periods. They are ideal for brick and mortar stores, because they last much longer on store shelves.
Florida Oranges: The oranges that grow in Florida do so in a hotter, wetter climate. As a result, these oranges are much juicier and sweeter. In fact, the majority of Florida’s oranges are used for juicing. The peels are usually thinner, and the oranges are easier to eat out of hand. This makes whole Florida oranges ideal for direct shipping rather than supermarket sales. Since our oranges are shipped straight from the grove to your door, there’s plenty of time to enjoy them. Florida oranges typically last 2-3 weeks when refrigerated.

Which credit cards do you accept?

We accept all major credit cards including American Express, Discover, Mastercard and Visa.

Can I cancel an order?

If your order has not been packed or shipped, we will be happy to cancel it.  To cancel, please contact our customer service department immediately at 1-800-608-2525.

Is it safe to use my credit card online?

Our site is 100% secure and tested each day to insure that your information is safe. We do not sell or distribute any information about you to anyone.

I need to make a change to my order - how can I do that?

Changes may be requested by contacting our customer service team at 1-800-608-2525 or by email at info@mixon.com. All changes must be requested a minimum of 48 hours prior to ship week/date. We cannot make changes after the order is packed or shipped.

Can I create my own basket selection or do I have to use only the ones in the catalogue?

We do not allow substitutions on our shipped Specialty Gift Boxes or Baskets but you can choose items from our add-in list to create something unique. Any Mixon label products may be ordered and shipped separately.

Is all the fruit grown in the Mixon Fruit Farm Groves?

The majority of our fruit is picked fresh from our groves daily. To maintain our fruit supply we may supplement as required from other quality Florida growers. Our Produce selection, such as Georgia Peaches, is grown and shipped by other family owned farms chosen for their quality products.

Can I specify the flavors of Jelly included in fruit packages?

We do not allow substitutions in our Specialty Gift Boxes, but any Mixon label products may be ordered and shipped separately.

I have fruit with green on the skin – is it ripe?

The peel of Florida oranges range in color from orange, or yellow-orange, to greenish yellow. The bright orange color so frequently associated with maturity, actually results from cooler night temperatures. Color is not an indication of ripeness. Florida oranges have thinner skins and may be yellow-green in color, but are sweet and juicy. They can actually turn orange and then back to green depending on temperatures. Ripe, juicy oranges feel firm and heavy, with skin texture ranging from smooth to pebbly.

Do you ship your ice cream?

We do not ship our ice cream.  Shipping costs are about 4 times the cost of the product since it would require special handling permits, Dry Ice and Expedited Shipping.

Do you ship your juice?

Yes, we can ship Fresh Frozen Orange, Grapefruit, Lemon Juice and Lemonade via 1-3 day ground service to most of the eastern US.  2 Day and Next Day service to all other areas is available with an upcharge for those delivery services.  We only ship juice Monday-Wednesday to assure delivery within the 2-3 days.

We freeze fresh juice the same day it is squeezed and keep frozen until shipped so that it will have a 2 week refrigerated shelf life once it is thawed.  We ship in our regular half gallon containers that are about 3-4 ounces short filled to allow for expansion without spill over during the freezing process.  Some thawing may happen in the shipping process but can be re-frozen. Only thaw the juice as you can use it within 2 weeks.

Thawing instructions are included with shipment.  Rapid thawing can be done with microwave in short (30 seconds or less) intervals shaking content in between to prevent over-heating juice.

Do you ship Kumquats?

Kumquats are too fragile and perishable to be shipped, but are available in our store when they are in season, usually mid Dec - mid Jan.

Can I have more then two types of fruit in one box?

We offer a variety of different packs with different standard content.  We cannot substitute.  Use the search function on the web page for the specific variety you desire to show all packages containing that variety.

Can I change the products in the Specialty Gift Boxes?

Sorry, Substitutions on Special Gift Boxes are not permitted.

Can I add fudge to a Gift Box?

No, fudge must be shipped separately.

Why can’t I specify a particular type of tangerine?

Tangerines are more fragile and perishable than oranges or grapefruits. For this reason we must reserve the right to choose only the freshest variety available at the time your order is packed. We want to make sure your fruit arrives fresh and delicious.

Which fruit ripens the earliest?

Our first fruits of the season are Navel Oranges and Red grapefruit.

Do the catalog prices include shipping?

There are additional charges for shipments to Arizona, California, Texas, Canada and FedEx Expedited Shipping. Call 1-800-608-2525 (Local 748-5829) for further information.

Can I specify fruit size?

No, we ship a large size fruit specific to each variety.  We do offer some specialty packs with larger or smaller sizes for some varieties.

How many pieces of fruit are in each box?

Most fruit is packed in trays with foam that has a specific number of cells for each fruit to provide extra protection for each piece of fruit.  Generally 9 or12 pieces of oranges/tangerines per tray and 5 or 9 pieces of Grapefruit per tray.  Shipments can have 1-4 trays per package.

Shipping Questions

What are your shipping fees?

The prices shown include standard shipping except as noted under the Customer Service menu – see Ordering Information for Canada and select states.

Why can’t I have fruit shipped to Arizona, California, or Texas anytime?

Due to agricultural restrictions, we are not allowed to ship Florida citrus into these states without going through a fumigation process.  It is only done on certain dates.

Why can’t you ship my fruit by UPS?

Mixon’s has negotiated special shipping rates from FedEx which helps to keep the cost of our gift fruit shipping down. Shipping by UPS would cost considerably more but can be arranged for additional charges.

Do you ship fruit overseas?

We do not ship outside the continental US & Canada at this time.

Can I have the delivery carrier call me on the day they deliver?

No, our carriers do not offer this service but if we have your email address we will email shipping notification with the ship date and tracking number when your package is shipped.

How long will it take for me to receive my fruit?

Our standard shipping takes 3-5 business days, depending on distance. During the Christmas season it could take longer. This does not include time to process and pack the fruit. Addresses to PO boxes and some rural routes are shipped via the Florida Gift Fruit Shippers Association on pre-selected dates. These may take a little longer to arrive. Expedited shipping is available for additional charges.

What kind of packing boxes do you use and what are they made of?

We use high quality corrugated shipping boxes made especially for Mixon’s. The fruit is handpacked in foam cushioned trays to protect the fruit.
